The Dangers of Parasitic Worms

The most common internal parasite, roundworms are especially prevalent in puppies. Roundworms live in the intestines and deprive their hosts of nutrients. On average they are about 3-5 inches long. A slender, spaghetti-noodle shaped worm can be found in the stools of a dog that is heavily infested, or a fecal exam by a veterinarian will reveal roundworm eggs.

Symptoms of Infection: Treatment:
• Vomiting
• Weakness
• Weight Loss
• Dull, Scruffy fur
• Swollen abdomen
• Diarrhea
• Malnutrition
• Loss of appetite
• Respiratory distress
Treatment is simple thanks to several safe and effective drugs that are available to kill roundworms in the intestine. The drugs temporarily anesthetize the worms so they pass out of the animal with a normal bowel movement. It is recommended to give de-worming treatments to your pets at least once every six months.

Many people mistaken ringworm to be a disease associated with worms. In actual fact, despite its name, ringworm has got nothing to do with worms. It is a fungal infection. The appearance of ringworms is the reason behind the name as it looks like a ring or round circle on the skin.

Symptoms of Infection: Treatment:
• Patches of hair loss
• Red Circular scaly areas with raised edges
• Small round nodes with possible bacterial infection frequently accompanying ringworm.
• Excessive scratching or pawing in one area with possible bacterial infection
Topical shampoo therapy is used in almost every case, especially in longer haired pets. It is common to clip some or all of the hair in some pets to make it more effective. These baths will also remove infected hairs that can be the source of an infection to people or other animals. Humans are vulnerable hosts to ringworms too, so it's important to create a safe environment for both you and your pet.
